The serpent urged the maiden fair
"You shall not surely die!"
"Your eyes be opened if you dare..."
In glorious light he clothed his lie!

"Good and evil yourself discern,
For heaven’s wisdom vie!"
If the secret she would learn,
The serpents wings to try.

To be as God was the plea,
Heaven’s vault to pry,
To, "take, and eat like me!"
"Soar above in freedom’s sky!"

"Good and evil yourself discern,
For heaven’s wisdom vie!"
If the secret she would learn,
The serpents wings to try.

But unbounded knowledge she was soon to see,
With tear dimmed sight to cry
Meant to know sorrow and misery
Countless days in grief to sigh!

"Good and evil yourself discern,
For heaven’s wisdom vie!"
If the secret she would learn,
The serpents wings to try.

Her second son lay cold and still
Once so bright and full of joy!
"How could his brother choose to kill,
Her dear child! Her little boy!"

"Good and evil yourself discern,
For heaven’s wisdom vie!"
If the secret she would learn,
The serpents wings to try.

No consolation to know why,
"Instead of him, WHY NOT ME?!"
She herself had bought the lie--
the offer, "like God to be!"

"Good and evil yourself discern,
For heaven’s wisdom vie!"
If the secret she would learn,
The serpents wings to try.
