Answers:

1. Did Ellen White "claim the title" of a prophet?

Some have stumbled over the fact that I said I did not claim to be a prophet; and they have asked, Why is this? I have had no claims to make, only that I am instructed that I am the Lord's messenger; that He called me in my youth to be His messenger, to receive His word, and to give a clear and decided message in the name of the Lord Jesus.

Early in my youth I was asked several times, Are you a prophet? I have ever responded, I am the Lord's messenger. I know that many have called me a prophet, but I have made no claim to this title. My Saviour declared me to be His messenger. "Your work," He instructed me, "is to bear My word. Strange things will arise, and in your youth I set you apart to bear the message to the erring ones, to carry the word before unbelievers, and with pen and voice to reprove from the Word actions that are not right. Exhort from the Word. I will make My Word open to you. It shall not be as a strange language. In the true eloquence of simplicity, with voice and pen, the messages that I give shall be heard from one who has never learned in the schools. My Spirit and My power shall be with you.

"Be not afraid of man, for My shield shall protect you. It is not you that speaketh: it is the Lord that giveth the messages of warning and reproof. Never deviate from the truth under any circumstances. Give the light I shall give you. The messages for these last days shall be written in books, and shall stand immortalized, to testify against those who have once rejoiced in the light, but who have been led to give it up because of the seductive influences of evil."  ---Selected Messages Book 1, pages 31,32

2. Why Did she not claim the title of a prophet?

Why have I not claimed to be a prophet?--Because in these days many who boldly claim that they are prophets are a reproach to the cause of Christ; and because my work includes much more than the word "prophet" signifies. ---Selected Messages Book 1, page 32.

To claim to be a prophetess is something that I have never done. If others call me by that name, I have no controversy with them. But my work has covered so many lines that I cannot call myself other than a messenger, sent to bear a message from the Lord to His people, and to take up work in any line that He points out.

When I was last in Battle Creek, I said before a large congregation that I did not claim to be a prophetess. Twice I referred to this matter, intending each time to make the statement, "I do not claim to be a prophetess." If I spoke otherwise than this, let all now understand that what I had in mind to say was that I do not claim the title of prophet or prophetess. ---Selected Messages Book 1, pages 34,35

3. According to  her own testimony, why did God inspire her with with messages for the church, when we already had the Bible?

Purpose of the Testimonies. --The Word of God is sufficient to enlighten the most beclouded mind, and
may be understood by those who have any desire to understand it. But notwithstanding all this, some who profess to make the Word of God their study, are found living in direct opposition to its plainest teachings. Then, to leave men and women without excuse, God gives plain and pointed testimonies, bringing them back to the Word that they have neglected to follow. The Word of God abounds in general principles for the formation of correct habits of living, and the Testimonies, general and personal, have been calculated to call their attention more especially to these principles.   ---Evangelism, pages 256, 257 (Testimonies,  vol. 5, pp. 663, 664.) 1889

4. Can you name 2 of the many ways that her ministry             differred from that of a mysitic?

The Spirit of Prophecy vs. Mysticism

Spirit of Prophecy

Mysticism

By the  will of God

To  whom God wills:

According to the Bible, God Chooses who He will inspire as a prophet:

"For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost." ---2 Peter 1:21

"But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as He will." ---1 Cor. 12:11

When God wills:

The Bible account of Saul seeking devine knowlege through the witch of Endor clearly illustrates that God communicates through prophets only when He chooses.

"And Saul answered, I am sore distressed; for the Philistines make war against me, and God is departed from me, and answereth me no more, neither by prophets, nor by dreams: therefore I have called thee, that thou mayest make known unto me what I shall do." ---1 Samuel 28:15b

By the will of man

To whosoever wills:

According to mystics, all may have the same direct comunication with God as a prophet,   through the using special exercises, preparations/ techniques for meditation or incantations, etc...

When man wills:

The same account illustrates that heathen, practioners of the mystic arts, generally conjure revealations at will.

(see left column)

Ellen White and Biblical prophets did not breathe while in vision. Mystics commonly use rythmic breathing paterns to gain trace states.
Ellen White and Biblical prophets are 100% accurate in predictions of future events (though some prophecies are conditional.) A Mystic is thought to be exceptional if more than half of their prophecies are accurate.
Ellen White and Biblical prophets become suddenly weak upon entering vision, and then gain super-human strength:

Therefore I was left alone, and saw this great vision, and there remained no strength in me: for my comeliness was turned in me into corruption, and I retained no strength. Yet heard I the voice of his words: and when I heard the voice of his words, then was I in a deep sleep on my face, and my face toward the ground.
And, behold, an hand touched me, which set me upon my knees and upon the palms of my hands. And he said unto me, O Daniel, a man greatly beloved, understand the words that I speak unto thee, and stand upright: for unto thee am I now sent. And when he had spoken this word unto me, I stood trembling. Then said he unto me, Fear not, Daniel: for from the first day that thou didst set thine heart to understand, and to chasten thyself before thy God, thy words were heard, and I am come for thy words. But the prince of the kingdom of Persia withstood me one and twenty days: but, lo, Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me; and I remained there with the kings of Persia. Now I am come to make thee understand what shall befall thy people in the latter days: for yet the vision is for many days. And when he had spoken such words unto me, I set my face toward the ground, and I became dumb. And, behold, one like the similitude of the sons of men touched my lips: then I opened my mouth, and spake, and said unto him that stood before me, O my lord, by the vision my sorrows are turned upon me, and I have retained no strength. For how can the servant of this my lord talk with this my lord? for as for me, straightway there remained no strength in me, neither is there breath left in me. Then there came again and touched me one like the appearance of a man, and he strengthened me, ---Daniel 10:8-18

This is not a normative charateristic of mystics.
Ellen White and Biblical prophets went into vision with their eyes open:

He hath said, which heard the words of God, which saw the vision of the Almighty, falling into a trance, but having his eyes open: How goodly are thy tents, O Jacob, and thy tabernacles, O Israel! ---Numbers 24:4-5

Mystics generally close eyes  or fixate on an object.
Ellen White and Biblical prophets speak in harmony with God's law and the testimony of scripure:

To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them. ---Isaiah 8:20

Mystics do not hold their revealations to the authority of scripture, but often declare things that are in complete contradiction to the Bible.
Ellen White and Biblical prophets lived holy lives:

"For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost." ---2 Peter 1:21

Mystics have been known to lead highly immoral lives.

5. Did she ever give counsel that was merely her own             opinion?

If the preconceived opinions or particular ideas of some are crossed in being reproved by testimonies, they have a burden at once to make plain their position to discriminate between the testimonies, defining what is Sister White's human judgment, and what is the word of the Lord. Everything that sustains their cherished ideas is divine, and the testimonies to correct their errors are human--Sister White's opinions. They make of none effect the counsel of God by their tradition. ---The Ellen G. White 1888 Materials, page 257

6. Did the her understanding and presentation of the               gospel change through her years of ministry?

NO

Today, some SDA pastors teach that 1888 was are year of great change in EGW's undersanding of "righteousness by faith" and after that date she no longer wrote from such a "legalistic" veiwpoint.   Even in the year of the 1888 Minneapolis General Conference, this charge was already being made, but she responded decidedly:

I have had the question asked, What do you think of this light that these men are presenting? Why, I have been presenting it to you for the last forty-five years--the matchless charms of Christ. This is what I have been trying to present before your minds. When Brother Waggoner brought out these ideas in Minneapolis, it was the first clear teaching on this subject from any human lips I had heard, excepting the conversations between myself and my husband. I have said to myself, It is because God has presented it to me in vision that I see it so clearly, and they cannot see it because they have never had it presented to them as I have. And when another presented it, every fiber of my heart said, Amen.--Ms 5, p. 10. (Sermon, Rome, New York, June 19, 1889.) ---Manuscript Releases Volume Five, page 219

But there were quite a number who held fast their evil surmisings and clung to the distorted representations made of me, as though these reports were too precious to be given up, although they had not one real vestige of evidence that I had changed. It seemed to be their preference to believe the false reports. I felt deeply grieved that my brethren who had known me for years and had evidence of the character of my labor should continue to remain in the deception they were in and, rather than confess that they had been mistaken, hold on to the same false impressions as though they were truth. ---The Ellen G. White 1888 Materials, page 355.

I will not state any further particulars, but you will need to know that I have not changed my ideas, or my position. The way I viewed things I plainly stated to you at Minneapolis. I am the same in mind, in spirit and in faith. Because of the ideas that had been started and were prevailing, being sent by letters from the conference and afterwards reported, I stated by experience and work for the last forty five years before you at Minneapolis and Battle Creek. But since some of my brethren hold me in the light they do, that my judgment is of no more value than that of any other, or of one who has not been called to this special work, and that I am subject to the influence of my son Willie, or of some others, why do you send for Sister White to attend your camp-meetings or special meetings? I cannot come. I could not do you any good, and it would only be trifling with the sacred responsibilities the Lord has laid upon me. ---The Ellen G. White 1888 Materials, page 252
